Know this before you move up.
When should a child move from a harness to a booster?+
Keep using the forward-facing harness until the child reaches that exact seat’s stated height or weight limit. A booster-ready child must also be able to sit correctly for the entire ride. Review NHTSA guidance and both manuals.
Harness-to-booster or dedicated high-back booster?+
A harness-to-booster starts with an internal five-point harness and later converts. A dedicated high-back booster has no internal harness and uses the vehicle lap-and-shoulder belt.
What does correct booster belt fit look like?+
The lap belt should lie low and snug across the upper thighs, not the stomach. The shoulder belt should cross the chest and shoulder, not the neck or face. A belt-positioning booster requires a lap-and-shoulder belt.

Booster seats and harness-to-booster seats are designed to keep older children safe and comfortable as they transition out of car seats. Booster seats are intended for children who have outgrown their forward-facing car seats but are not yet tall enough to use the vehicle's seatbelt alone, typically between 4–10 years old and 40–100 pounds. Harness-to-booster seats offer a 5-point harness for younger kids and convert to a belt-positioning booster as they grow, making them ideal for extended use. Always check the manufacturer’s height and weight guidelines to ensure a proper fit.
